Breaking: Fedora Asahi Remix 44 Now Available

Fedora Asahi Remix 44 has been officially released, bringing the latest Fedora Linux 44 features to Apple Silicon Macs. The announcement was made today by the Fedora Asahi Special Interest Group (SIG) in collaboration with the Asahi Linux project.

This release marks a significant milestone for the community-driven effort to run Linux on Apple’s M1, M2, and M3 chips. Users can now download and install the remix directly from the project’s installation guide.

Key Features and Changes

Fedora Asahi Remix 44 integrates all improvements from Fedora Linux 44, including updated packages and security patches. Critically, the remix retires its vendored Mesa and virglrenderer packages, transitioning to upstream Fedora repositories automatically for existing users.

“This transition simplifies maintenance and guarantees users receive the latest graphics drivers directly from Fedora,” said Neal Gompa, Fedora Asahi SIG lead. “It’s a huge step forward for stability and long-term support.”

The flagship desktop environment is KDE Plasma 6.6, featuring a new Plasma Setup wizard that replaces the previous Calamares-based system. Plasma Login Manager now serves as the default greeter and session manager, replacing SDDM on fresh installs.

For users who prefer GNOME, a variant with GNOME 50 is available. Additionally, a Fedora Server edition and a Minimal image cater to headless deployments or custom builds.

Upgrade Path and Installation

New users should follow the official installation guide. Existing systems running Fedora Asahi Remix 42 or 43 can upgrade using KDE’s Plasma Discover or the DNF system upgrade command. Note: Upgrades via GNOME Software are not supported.

“We recommend all users on older releases to upgrade as soon as possible to benefit from the latest security and performance enhancements,” added Hector Martin, founder of Asahi Linux.

Background

Fedora Asahi Remix is a specialized distribution developed jointly by the Fedora Asahi SIG and the Asahi Linux project. It aims to provide a polished, daily-driver Linux experience on Apple Silicon Macs, which lack official upstream support from Apple.

Previous releases have brought KDE Plasma and GNOME to the platform, but version 44 represents the first major version aligned with Fedora’s own release cycle. The retire of vendored drivers underscores the maturation of upstream support for the hardware.

What This Means

For users, this release means a more stable, up-to-date Linux environment on Apple Silicon. The shift to upstream Mesa and virglrenderer ensures better compatibility with future Fedora updates and reduces fragmentation.

Enterprises and developers can now deploy Fedora Server on Mac hardware with confidence. The release also signals growing ecosystem maturity: Apple Silicon Linux is no longer an experimental niche but a viable alternative for many workloads.

“This is a testament to the power of open source collaboration,” Martin said. “We’ve gone from booting a bare kernel to a full, daily-drivable desktop in under three years.”

Support and Reporting Issues

Users encountering Remix-specific bugs should report them in the official tracker. Community support is available via the Discourse forum and the Matrix room.
