Google has officially upgraded its Gemini for Home voice assistant to the Gemini 3.1 model, promising major improvements in handling complex, multi-step requests. The update, confirmed in a press release today, is fully deployed to all early access users.
According to Google, the new model makes the assistant 'smarter, more capable, and better at handling requests that previously needed several separate commands.' Users can now combine tasks like adding items to a list, checking a calendar, setting a reminder, and adjusting an alarm in a single sentence.

The upgrade addresses two key pain points: multi-step command processing and persistent AM/PM alarm confusion. Google says the assistant now 'understands context across multiple requests,' so you can say, 'Add milk to my shopping list, remind me to buy it tomorrow at 3 PM, and set an alarm for 7 AM – but not the one that wakes me up.'
'We’ve heard users frustrated with having to break down everyday tasks into individual commands,' said a Google spokesperson. 'Gemini 3.1 changes that by interpreting intent and memory across actions.' The company also fixed a bug where alarms set for 7:00 PM would instead trigger at 7:00 AM.

Gemini for Home launched earlier this year as a smarter alternative to Google Assistant. Last week, Google promised speed and reliability improvements, but the company described that update as 'fine-tuning.' Today’s move to Gemini 3.1 is a full model upgrade—the most advanced version yet.
The rollout is limited to early access users, who first gained access in December. Google hasn’t announced a wider release date, but the press release notes that the update is 'fully rolled out' to that group. Analysts expect a public launch within weeks if early feedback is positive.
What This Means for Users
For early adopters, the upgrade translates to fewer failed commands and less repetition. Instead of issuing a string of separate requests (“Add eggs to list... now set a timer for 10 minutes... now turn on the kitchen light”), you can bundle them into one sentence. The AM/PM fix alone could prevent thousands of missed alarms. Google says the assistant now evaluates time context based on recent requests and device time, reducing mix-ups.
How to Access the Update
If you’re an early access user, no action is needed. The upgrade is automatic. To verify, say “What version are you?” – if it replies with “Gemini 3.1,” you’re set. Non-early-access users can sign up for the waitlist on the Google Home app.
